Walhalla, SC Real Estate

    Walhalla is located in the center of Oconee County South Carolina and serves as the county seat. It is a small town with a population of 4,263 according to the 2010 US Census.  The land was first inhabited like much of the land in the foothill area by the Cherokee Indians.  In 1848 the German Colonization Society was established in Charleston South Carolina and a group of German immigrants. They purchased 17,859 acres for $27,000 December 24, 1849. It was decided the area would be called Walhalla which was known as “The Garden of Gods”. The town or Walhalla was incorporated on December 19, 1855.walhalla2

    Walhalla is currently renovating the city’s Main Street area with a $2 million streetscape project.  In July 2015 the Palmetto Conservation announced the Palmetto Trail will extend into Walhalla. The trail will be 16 miles long providing both hiking and biking opportunities.  The Palmetto Trail began construction in 1994 and currently covers 360 miles.  Plans are to connect Walhalla to Charleston with a 500 mile trail that will offer hikers the natural beauty of the state.



    Throughout the year you can find events going on in Walhalla at the Oconee Heritage Center, Museum of the Cherokee in South Carolina, and the Walhalla Civic Auditorium which was built in 1913 as part of the Walhalla school. Other attractions such as the Stump House Tunnel and Issaqueena Falls are located near Walhalla and offer a relaxing spot for a picnic or hike. Each fall the communities comes together to celebrate and remember its German heritage with “Oktoberfest”. Events are planned for the entire family during the month of October.
